My worst travel experiences stemmed directly from the fact that, in any foreign port, the Navy requires the "buddy system," i.e. you cannot leave the ship alone but must go with one or two shipmates. OMG, Sailors can be the most unimaginative people! Chicago, just out of Boot Camp: we spend hours looking for a tobacco shop that sells "cloves," because one guy wanted a smoke but didn't want to get caught smelling of cigarettes; then sitting in the waiting room of a supposed beauty salon while another guy went in the back with the female "attendant." Singapore, and the only places they wanted to go were franchise locations of the same places you can go in the U.S.A. Thailand, and it was unbelievably hard to find anyone who cared to do anything besides hang out in bars and brothels. Malaysia, and again the bars.
No wonder I prefer to travel solo: the world is full of boring people, and I need to be free to ditch them!
