Walking is the ultimate in budget travel in that you pay $0 in ticket/fare costs, $0 in fuel costs, and $0 in parking fees. All you pay for is food and lodging.
In the U.S. we have several north-south long distance trails: the Appalachian, Continental Divide, and Pacific Crest Trails. I have heard of the Long Trail also, though I do not recall where it is.
In Europe, there is also a network of long-distance trails, and also the famous pilgrimage route across Spain to Santiago de Compostela.
If certain political situations would change, I would love one day to walk the Burma Road, and the entire length of the Great Wall of China.
From time to time, I have contemplated just leaving everything behind, just up and start walking, no specific destination in mind.
How far would you walk?
