I am sometimes surprised at what is referred to as "extreme." I remember taking some kind of survey, in which one of the questions was which of these "extreme" aquatic sports and activities do you participate in. Snorkeling was on the list. I snorkel, and I never thought of it as "extreme." Strenuous sometimes, sure, especially in places like Key Largo where you have to swim against the surf; but I didn't find it any more challenging than some trail hiking I have done.
Surely we as a culture have not become so effete that any physically challenging activity is deemed "extreme"? I hope not! Then again, I have seen group outings in fairly innocuous outdoor locations, such as gently rolling terrain in pockets of woodland surrounded by civilization, in which there is the standard legal disclaimer about the inherent hazards of outdoor activity.
So what does it take for an activity or vacation to be considered "extreme"?
