Santorini was a discovery I've read an awful lot about a great many places, but on the trip around the Med we landed on the island of Santorini and it really changed my whole understanding of that part of the world. The old culture of Santorini (1500 BCE) is astonishing, like a bolt from the blue.
I suppose I hope for 'discoveries' like that when I travel. It happens if I get lucky.
