Been hitting the road since 17, when I took an AmeriPass all across and up and down the US...no way in hell I would let a kid of MINE do that, but anyway...
My top two trips so far have been:
In the summer of 2023, I biked around Ireland, solo, for a month. Apart from getting rained on (SIX times in one day!) it was just great! Twice I lucked out completely, and got the very last hotel room in a city. (I was prepared to sleep rough, but never had to.) Friendly people, good roads, and lots and lots to see, with some special highlights. I'll never forget looking out of my B&B window one morning only to discover my favorite Hopkins poem, "The WIndhover" painted on the wall across the way. You won't see THAT in Murrica!
And, just last February, I spent a week on...Rapa Nui! Yeah! The one with the moai! There's no place else like it on Earth, and it was as exotic as advertised. The highlight was the quarry, where faces popped out of the ground everywhere -- it was like the cover of a Pink Floyd album. Entertainment was provided by the free-range chickens EVERYWHERE; instead of being "Isla da Pasqua," it should be "Isla de pollos."
Next up? The Galapagos. And then, I'd like to see the Taj Mahal IRL, but at the moment, that's the only other place I'm passionate about. Could change, though.
